Aluminium Nitride (AlN)

The high thermal conductivity and excellent electrical insulation makes aluminium nitride (AIN) suitable for a range of extreme environments.

Aluminium nitride is a high performance material particularly suited to demanding electrical applications. We combine expansive technical understanding with a commitment to working with customers, ensuring that our material solutions meet exacting specifications whilst providing exceptional performance.

Aluminium nitride can be produced by dry press and sinter or by hot pressing with appropriate sintering aids, the result of these processes is a material that is stable at high temperatures in a range of inert environments including hydrogen and carbon dioxide atmospheres. Aluminium nitride is principally used in the electronics area, particularly when heat removal is an important function.

Aluminium nitride properties also make it particularly useful in the creation of corrosion resistant products. Our unique approach to developing and manufacturing means that our engineers collaborate with customers to ensure that corrosion resistant products or components consistently satisfy customer requirements.

Typical aluminium nitride characteristics include:

  • Very good thermal conductivity
  • Thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of silicon
  • Good dielectric properties
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Stability in semiconductor processing atmospheres

Typical aluminium nitride applications include:

  • Heat sinks
  • Electronic substrates
  • IC packages
  • Power transistor bases
  • Microwave device packages
