Magnesium Oxide

Morgan Technical Ceramics manufacture a range of lower density magnesium oxide materials such as magnesia and our trademarked Luminex®.

Our range of magnesium oxide materials are suitable for various uses due to their electrical and refractory properties. Whilst dense magnesia has limited uses as an engineering ceramic, lower density variants of magnesia such as our Luminex® material can be utilised in a range of market sectors and industry specific applications.

Luminex® magnesium oxide is made from seawater precipitated magnesium oxide. The high magnesia content and low impurities make for a consistent material and minimal traces of boron and cadmium allow for low neutron capture. Magnesium oxide performs excellently in high temperatures, particularly in the creation of electrical insulation, where our Luminex® range excels. Other properties of magnesium oxide include effective corrosion resistance and that it is transparent to infrared light.

Luminex® and other magnesia materials have uses in a wide variety of applications. From electrical insulation and heating elements to kiln furniture items and crucibles, our magnesium oxide materials perform excellently in challenging situations.

Working collaboratively with clients we combine the extensive knowledge of our materials engineers with proven development and manufacturing processes. Subsequently we are able to deliver capable, cost effective magnesium oxide materials and components that meet exacting customer specifications.

Magnesium Oxide Luminex® Characteristics

  • High temperature capability - up to 1500°C
  • Low electrical conductivity
  • High thermal conductivity
  • Good corrosion resistance
  • Infrared transparent
  • Tailorable particle size distribution, porosity and crushability

Luminex® Applications

Luminex® can be extruded for uniform shapes or injection moulded for more complex shapes and additional features. Typical applications include but are not limited to crushable tubes for mineral insulated (MI) cable, thermocouple wire for both aerospace and automotive applications, cartridge heaters, electrical substrates and medium-voltage heaters.
