Morgan Advanced Materials offers a range of multi-layer actuators to meet the growing demand for precise, controllable and repeatable displacement devices in the micrometre and submicrometre range.
Piezo actuators / bimorphs
Morgan Advanced Materials' piezo actuators / bimorphs can be found in a host of specialist application areas, including ultrasonic atomizers, transducers, printing technologies, pneumatic valves, textile machinery and many more. All are the result of close co-design and co-development relationships with our customers. They are available in a range of sizes from six to 74mm in length and one to 43mm in width, to reflect the variety of applications in which they can be used.
Piezoelectric composite materials dramatically improve the performance of ultrasound and sonar transducers used in medical, biometric, military and industrial applications. For example, a composite configuration made with precision pillars of piezoelectric ceramic and a polymer matrix filler outperforms a monolithic component constructed solely of the same piezoelectric ceramic.
Standard shapes and sizes
With our extensive materials and engineering expertise we produce a wide range of experimental and prototype components in addition to the standard range of products. Our applications engineers are always pleased to assist and advise customers seeking new solutions to problems involving piezoelectric materials.
Plates are normally cut from an option of three alternative standard sizes, i.e. Iateral dimensions of 40 x 20mm, 50 x 50mm, 89 x 42mm. Still larger sizes up to 150mm lengths can be cut from discs.
Discs can be manufactured up to 150mm diameter with a thickness range from 0.2mm up to 40mm (please note not every combination is available for every material).
Hemispheres & focal bowls
Hemispheres are available in two forms:
- Unmachined, low cost, hemispheres with mechanical tolerances + 3% or 0.3mm whichever is greater
- Fully machined hemispheres and focal bowls to standard, mechanical tolerances
The table gives the range of standard tubes available. We are able to manufacture custom products outside this range and will be pleased to discuss customers' particular requirements.
Examples of some of our standard rings are listed in the table but tooling for a much wider range of sizes is also available. The thickness of rings is easily varied.
Fired-on silver electrodes are usually applied to all ceramics (except shear plates). Typical silver thickness is 3-10µm per electrode which is satisfactory for most applications. Thicker silver coatings can be applied if required. Cold silver electrodes are applied to shear plates and the cold silver cannot be soldered.
