Piezoelectric Bimorphs

The Technical Ceramics business of Morgan Advanced Materials started production of piezo bimorphs in the early 1960s. Our experience in the development of customized high precision piezo bimorph components results in real added-value for our customers.

Today you will find our piezo bimorphs in a host of specialist applications including positioning transducers, printing technologies, pneumatic valves, textile machinery and many more. All are the result of close co-design and co-development relationships with our customers. 

Our rectangular bimorphs are available in a range of sizes from 6 to 74mm in length, 1 to 43mm in width and thickness from 0.48 to 2mm Other sizes and constructions are available on request.

Series and parallel bimorphs offer high sensitivity and are cost effective.

Carbon-fibre and metal re-inforced bimorphs offer a high force/deflection ratio and extremely long life-time.

We also make PZT bimorph elements for use in applications in automotive, aerospace, medical, industrial markets. 

Our co-fired PZT bimorph is a two layer PZT device that is configured with a central encapsulated electrode region. It is made in a similar way to a conventional bonded bimorph except that is fired at a temperature that sinters the two layers of PZT into a monolithic structure separated only by the inner electrode. The benefit of this construction is that the bimorph is more mechanically stable and can be used in harsh environments since there is a uniform mechanical interface at the edges.

These bimorphs are also commonly used as actuators in fine micro-manipulation mechanisms such as computer hard drive indexing and aerospace valves. 

We manufacture the co-fired bimorphs from PZT5A3, PZT702, and PZT5H2 in configurations such as squares, rectangles, discs and rings.
