Product Focus - Glass

Morgan Technical Ceramics (MTC) can manufacture a wide range of products constructed from glass. MTC GBC Materials, based in Latrobe, USA have the manufacturing capabilities to produce three separate product types using proprietary processes and in excess of 300 glass compositions.

Glass Product Types

Glass Sealing Preforms: MTC GBC Materials can produce hermetic seals in a range of complexities. These preforms are produced in high volumes and are frequently used within applications such as relays, fibre optic connectors, integrated circuit packages and fuses.

Precision Glass Products: Precision glass products include tubes and rods manufactured to tight tolerances. The variety of environments where such glass tubes and rods are used include miniature fuse bodies in electronics and lenses for photographic and computer equipment. Such products can be produced in low and high volumes.

Alumina Loaded Glass: Blending high performance alumina ceramic with glass, alumina loaded glass products are used within applications where thermal conductivity is demanded and traditional glass materials are inadequate. These glasses are manufactured and sold under the trade name of Hybralox.™ Hybralox™ uses a self glazing composition and it can also be metalized making it highly versatile. The glass is available in four different grades, each used for distinct applications and various sealing options.

Glass Forming Techniques

MTC GBC Materials uses two proprietary forming techniques to manufacture glass rods and tubes, these are:

Direct Draw: This technique allows MTC GBC Materials to manufacture products in high volumes; the drawing process also allows glass to be produced in a range of colours and specifications.

Re-Draw: The re-draw process is used to produce custom glass products to in response to demanding client specifications.

Glass is available in a variety of sizes up to an external diameter of 3.81mm. Typically glass is cut using a diamond saw to a predetermined length, for short lengths a tolerance of ± .05mm and for lengths in excess of 12.7mm, a tolerance of ± .075mm can be expected.

Industries & Applications

MTC GBC Materials glass products have been utilised in many industries, providing a high performance solution in telecommunications, appliance, electronics, aerospace and automotive markets. Frequently, glass products are used within fuse bodies, lenses for camera transistor, ROM and EPROM technology as well as glass to metal seals in IC packages.
