MTC Diamonex: A History of Proprietary Technologies

MTC Diamonex has been part of Morgan Ceramics since 2001. Before this time the business can boast a successful history based upon the development of proprietary processes for chemical and physical vapour deposition and unique technologies for the manufacture of polycrystalline and amorphous diamond. Currently MTC Diamonex operates in Pennsylvania from a 27,000 square foot facility with approximately 60 employees.

The history of MTC Diamonex can be traced back to 1984 when it operated as the Diamond Venture Unit of Air Products and Chemicals Inc. During its first 6 years the business invested a significant amount of research time, in excess of 260,000 man hours, to develop the technologies needed to produce CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) Diamond and DLC (Diamond Like Carbon). After 6 years of development Diamonex became an independent company in June 1990 and was no longer a unit of Air Products. The pursuit of this independence was attributed to the commercial potential for the proprietary processes across a wide range of industries.

3 years after becoming incorporated as an independent business the Monsanto Company’s Chemicals Group acquired Diamonex. Monsanto had been an early financial partner who was keen to deliver the new technologies within the plastics industry. Benefits of this acquisition included greater financial strength and market position as well as opening up other avenues for research due to Monsanto’s connections with laboratories in the former Soviet Union. As part of Monsanto’s approach to growing new businesses MTC Diamonex was then split into 2 groups during 1996; one to focus on the commercialisation of optical products for sun and eyewear and one to focus on performance products for commercial and industrial applications.

This latter division was subsequently acquired by Spencer Trask & Company until Diamonex in its entirety was acquired by Morgan Crucible in 2001. Since this time Diamonex has provided high performance products such as scratch resistant glass, DiamondShield® and DLC Coatings to a range of markets whilst continuing to develop advanced technologies and deposition processes.
